Morton's Neuroma
Morton’s Neuroma is a foot condition familiar to podiatrists where the patient complains of intense pain associated with swelling and possible inflammation in the area between the ball of the foot between the 3rd and 4th toes. The patient could complain of sharp pain, a burning sensation or possible lack of feeling at the affected area. Other indications could be cramping of the forefoot, tingling or numbness. Morton’s Neuroma is caused because of an unusual functioning of the foot which results in the nerve between the 3rd and 4th metatarsals being squeezed by a constriction of the bones. Symptoms of the condition occur when the forefoot area comes under pressure from walking, standing, jogging or jumping. It could result from ill-fitting footwear which constricts the bones in the forefoot resulting in pinching of the nerves. The first step in treatment is selection of proper footwear which helps relieve pain. Then use metatarsal pads behind the ball of the foot to distribute pressure and relieve the discomfort caused by the neuroma.
