The Child’s Foot
Though taken for granted, the human foot is a very important and complex part of the anatomy. Young children have soft, pliable feet which can deform easily with abnormal pressure. Such aberrations could be potentially damaging in later life as many adult foot problems have their origins in childhood. The first year is the most critical as the child’s foot grows rapidly, reaching at the end of the year to very nearly half adult size. This speedy rate of growth underscores the necessity for proper fitting footwear in children toward minimizing the risk of foot problems in later life. Ill-fitting or unsuitable footwear is easy to pinpoint because of the obvious pain and discomfort they cause. A visit to a podiatrist will be justified if:
- Wear in the shoe is uneven
- Lumps and bumps begin to appear on the feet
- The child complains of consistent pain in the feet
- The child trips and falls often
- There is evidence of skin and toenail problems
