Consult a foot doctor if you sprain your ankle
A sudden ankle sprain is a common problem many experience. Quite often the ankle rolls over on the outside resulting in ankle sprain. An ankle sprain simply means the stretching and/or tearing of ligaments. Sometimes the foot pain may be severe and at times mild. But the intensity of foot pain is not always the right indicator about the extent of the damage. The foot doctor will be able to find out the extent of the damage. If the foot doctor suspects any fracture, then he may want a foot X-ray examination.
The ankle sprain can be of the three different degrees depending on the extent of severity. First degree ankle sprain is nothing more than some stretching or minor tearing of the ligament. Second degree ankle sprain is a relatively more severe tearing of the ligaments accompanied by swelling and stiffness with moderate to severe pain. Third degree ankle sprain is a real cause for concern as it means total rupture of a ligament, severe swelling and acute ankle pain. It may even be total loss of joint function. The treatment for a sprained ankle is best started immediately. Any delay of ankle treatment may lead to chronic ankle pain and long term disability
