Keep your feet safe from painful bunions
An enlargement of bone or tissue around the joint at the head of the big toe is known as bunion. The big toe may point towards the second toe and the tissues surrounding the joint may be swollen and tender. Bunions occur more commonly in women. It is a common big toe problem that not only causes pain but also makes it difficult for you to find shoes that fit.
Types of Bunions
- Positional bunions are mild and arise from the growth of new bones.
- Structural bunions are severe and are caused when the joint at the base of the toe shifts positions.
Many other bunions are a combination of these two types.
Signs and symptoms
- Irritated skin around the bunion
- Pain while walking
- Joint redness and pain
- Possible shift of the big toe toward the other toes
- Formation of blisters around the bunion
You can prevent bunions by avoiding compression of your toes caused by narrow, ill-fitting shoes.
Treatment
You can treat bunions with change of footwear or use padding and shielding in your shoes. Ice, medication, rest etc also help. If it’s a serious condition then surgery maybe required. Consult your podiatrist if you have a bunion.
