Trench Foot
The feet are the most overworked part of the body and most often the most neglected. One rather unusual condition which is not commonly encountered is Trench Foot, sometimes known as Immersion Foot which happens as a result of the feet being constantly wet. The first symptoms are numbness accompanied with a reddening of the feet, itching or a tingling sensation. At the next stage the feet become blue indicating poor blood circulation. The foot may begin to swell and emit a decaying odor. The patient could experience cramps and pain. With a worsening condition the pulse begins to weaken while open sores and blisters begin to appear. If left untreated a fungal infection might set in and in the worst condition the foot might have to be amputated. Fortunately Trench Foot is relatively rare having been first discovered during WWI when troops spent long periods in flooded trenches.
