Orthotics

Orthotics is a podiatric term which confuses the average layperson. It is actually a shoe insert which can be soft or firm, custom or over the counter (OTC). OTC orthotics are available at good shoe stores, podiatrists and chiropractors. Custom orthotics however are made by a podiatrist or physical therapist with experience in dealing with foot and ankle conditions. Custom orthotics are specific to the complaint and diagnosis.

How do orthotics provide relief?

Orthotics are the result of significant scientific study. They are essentially designed to perform three significant functions:

  • They help distribute the pressure across your foot so that no particular area is unduly stressed.
  • They help to slow down and suppress pathological motion like over-supination or over-pronation.
  • They help, in a subconscious, neurological way, to create an awareness of your foot to its position on the ground. Orthotics provides relief and makes you feel good when placed in your shoe to cushion your foot.

When do you need a custom orthotic?

Custom orthotics are needed when OTC orthotics are unable to provide the expected relief. Custom orthotics should be podiatrist-designed or else they could cause more damage than good. They are generally made of more durable material which makes them last longer.

How long do orthotics last?

That largely depends on the wear and tear they are subjected to. In general, OTC orthotics last for about a year. Custom orthotics can be expected to last from between three and five years. Orthotics for children requires more frequent replacement, typically every one to two shoe sizes.

Orthotics is a specialized field which a podiatrist can advise on. Foot and Ankle Associates, a podiatric clinic in Los Gatos has three podiatrists apart from a trained staff. It treats patient of all ages for the full range of podiatric conditions. More details of this Bay Area podiatric facility are available at www.sanjosepodiatrist.net
