Ganglion Cyst

A ganglion is a cyst or sac-like swelling which generally appears on or around the tendons and joints of the hand or foot. It forms from the tissue called synovium which lines the tendon or joint which produces lubricating fluid for these areas. The precise reason why ganglia are formed is not known but can sometimes be the first indications of arthritis. A ganglion cyst on the foot can make it difficult to wear shoes and can be extremely painful if it pushes against the tendon or joint. The ganglion sometimes causes a burning or tingling sensation especially if it touches a bunch of nerves. Ganglia are caused by a variety of conditions, typically by an injury of sorts and also by extraordinary pressure or twisting of the tendon or joint. Ganglia are visible and diagnosed through a physical examination. Treatment varies according to the severity of the ganglion. If the discomfort caused is not acute and painful and does not interfere with normal walking and functions the podiatrist might advise observation till the cyst disappears or worsens. However if it persists, the podiatrist might perform an aspiration to drain the fluid from the cyst then inject medication to control inflammation and prevent subsequent refilling. In acute cases surgery might be recommended.
